Changing Your Mindset
‘My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.’
Hosea 4:6 NKJV
As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he - Proverbs 23:7
Colossians 3:2; Mark 9:23; Psalm 26:2; Deuteronomy 11:8; Romans 8:5-6
Introduction
Failing to unlearn irrational fears and misconceptions keeps us from becoming who God wants us to be. Many would have been greater than where they are today, but because of the type of mindset they have, they have not risen beyond a mediocre level. It is about your choices and your faith in the ability of God you believe and serve.
What is mindset
A mindset is an established set of attitude of a person or group concerning culture, values, philosophy, frame of mind, outlook and disposition.
Types
Growth mindset
Fixed mindset
Poverty mindset
Wealth mindset
Negative mindset
Positive mindset
Your mindset can cage you, your mindset can catapult you to the palace to wine and dine with kings. Having a negative mindset can hold you back from achieving your goals, because you’re essentially setting yourself up for failure.
Consequences of wrong mindset
1. It causes depression
2. Raises your blood pressure
3. Impacts your health generally
4. Failure
5. Broken relationships
6. Lack of happiness
7. You can’t go far.
The invalid man in John 5 is a great example of this. He had been disabled for thirty-eight years when Jesus asked if he would like to get well. However, the man believed there was only one way to be healed:
‘I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me’ (John 5:7 NKJV).
This man assumed something that may have cost him thirty-eight years! He thought that, in order to be healed, he had to be the first person into the pool of Bethesda when an angel stirred the water.
In a sense, he was imprisoned by that thought. But Jesus uninstalled that inaccurate belief with one sentence: ‘Take up your bed and walk’ (v. 11 NKJV). Jesus set this man free physically, and He set him free cognitively.
Another example was Martha, the sister of Lazarus in John 11:21-27
Faith is unlearning the senseless worries and misguided beliefs that keep us captive. And that’s what we do while we study Scripture. We literally upgrade our minds by a download of the mind of Christ (see 1 Corinthians 2:16). Unlearning something is twice as hard as learning it. Why? Because every mile you go in the wrong direction is really a two-mile error as you have to double back to get to where you need to be. Getting old thoughts out of your mind is harder than getting new thoughts into it. But it’s worth it. So, take time each day to renew your mind with God’s Word.
Conclusion
It is by renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2) that we can unlearn whatever believe system that has stuck in our heads as the only way. God has a thousand and one ways to do a miracle, just change your mindset and cooperate with Him in your life.
