Are You a Father or a Daddy? Father's Day 2025 Message

Are You a Father or a Daddy?

Key Scripture: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

Introduction

There is a distinction between being a father and being a daddy—one speaks to identity, the other to relationship. Many men can biologically father a child, but not every father cultivates a meaningful, loving relationship with their child. Today, we explore the characteristics of both and reflect on which best represents our Heavenly Father.

Who is a Father?

father is a provider, a protector, a guide—one who establishes structure and identity. The Bible often speaks of fatherhood in terms of responsibility:

  • “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children” (Proverbs 13:22).
  • “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).

A father ensures provision, discipline, and direction, but without intimacy, a child may feel distant from him.

Who is a Daddy?

daddy is relational—he is close, affectionate, and emotionally invested in his child's life. While fatherhood speaks of responsibility, daddyhood speaks of connection. We see this in Jesus’ relationship with His Father:

  • “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36).
Here, Jesus uses "Abba", an Aramaic term that reflects intimacy, much like saying "Daddy."

Which Best Represents Our Heavenly Father?

God is both a Father and a Daddy:

  1. He Provides – “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
  2. He Protects – “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).
  3. He Loves & Draws Near – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

While some earthly fathers might be absent or distant, God calls us His children and invites us to draw near (Romans 8:15). He is not just a ruler overseeing His creation; He is a loving Father who desires a relationship with His children.

Conclusion

If you are a father, ask yourself: Are you distant, or are you involved? Do you simply provide, or do you also connect? God models perfect fatherhood—one that is both responsible and deeply relational. As earthly parents, we should strive to reflect His example, being not just fathers in title but daddies in heart.

May we embrace both the authority and affection of our Heavenly Father, trusting Him as our provider, protector, and loving Daddy.
